Installing software

Installing RStudio

R and RStudio are free, open-source and cross-platform (so can be installed at no cost on your computer, be it Linux, Windows or Mac). We’ll use them extensively throughout this module and, depending upon your module choices next year, beyond. It’s therefore a good idea to install it on your machine. It’s perhaps also worth stating that RStudio is available on all Windows machines on campus.

On this page I’ll detail how to install it on Windows. Instructions for Mac and Linux are similar. Either watch the video or read the instructions (or both!).

Text instructions for installation

To install RStudio, you must install both R and RStudio.

Step one: install R

Download R from here: https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/ using the big Download text at the top. Run the installer (it’s just a case of clicking “Next” lots of times).

Step two: install RStudio

Download RStudio from here: https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/ (choose the free RStudio Desktop version). Run the installer. Again it’s largely a case of clicking “Next” a few times, then Finish.

Step three: open RStudio

RStudio should now be in your Start menu. Run it and conduct some statistical analyses joyfully (is there any other way?)
